Sustainability Overview
First Rail London is dedicated to operating the London Overground in a way that protects the environment, supports public health, and contributes to a greener future for the city. Our commitments align with Transport for London’s environmental plans and focus on meaningful, long-term environmental stewardship, including our preparations for a changing climate.
We will embed sustainability across every part of our operations—reducing resource use, minimising waste, improving efficiency, protecting biodiversity, and maintaining environmental management systems throughout the network. We consider environmental responsibility central to decision-making at all levels. We monitor and calculate our positive social value impact and support initiatives to improve this annually.
Net Zero Commitment
First Rail London is committed to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions for London Overground by 2030, supporting TfL’s ambition for a zero-carbon city. This includes reducing energy consumption, transitioning away from fossil fuels, and continuously improving how we measure, manage, and report carbon impacts.
Climate Emergency
We recognise the climate emergency and commit to ensuring the London Overground is resilient to climate change. Our commitment includes assessing climate risks, preparing the network for extreme weather, and integrating climate adaptation into planning, infrastructure, and operational decisions.
Air Quality
We are committed to improving air quality for customers, colleagues, and the communities we serve. This includes monitoring air quality across the network, reducing emissions from our operations and supply chain, and continuously improving onboard and station environments to support cleaner air.
